We had never been to the Big Island or Hilo, and were not sure where to rent, so this was a gamble. It turned out to be a quirky but lovely stop in our tour of the island. The bamboo structure is like it appears in the photos, but the outer deck is even sweeter - and the hammocks are perfect! We enjoyed meeting Jimmy right away (next door neighbor and caretaker) - he was a sweetheart and very attentive and accommodating. The kitchen was adequate, but not fancy, and there were generally the things you need if you cook. The grill worked fine. The geckos tend to leave you alone, but as others have noted, you have to get used to the loud coqui frogs and roosters that crow ALL the time! We didn't realize that the road would be so busy, and is particularly noisy later in the day when the local boys seem to love racing their motorcycles down to the beaches and back. The walk to the beach isn't too bad, but be aware that access is not right across the road like in the picture. The wifi was spotty, but Jimmy did the best he could to fix it. Note there is no cable TV, but a small collection of DVDs. The neighbors ran a chain saw much of one afternoon, but you can't predict that. It was generally located to easily get back into Hilo for shopping or eating.
If you want a funky place to chill, you'll be happy with this spot!
