Due to its location, this is the right place to stay in your visit to the region or North of Portugal. The house is located in a very quite and peaceful small village and like no other place in the region, the house is at the same time over the river Douro and near of a station (Aregos) of the historic line of Douro (connecting Oporto city to Pocinho - near the Portugal/Spain border). If you have or rent a boat you can find here all the amenities you need, since in the front of the house there is a pier, where you can park the boat, and a boat ramp. In the other river bank there is a gas station for motor boats.
There is a lot to do in the region. If you like to fish, the river is just ahead of the building. You can take a public boat to the other river bank (village of Caldas de Arêgos) where it is located a public SPA. The village offers a marina, nice bars, a restaurant, tennis courts to rent and a public outdoor swimming pool.
If you like history, nature and trailing, we recommend you "The ways of Jacinto". This is a trail that connects the Aregos train station to the Tormes farm (scenery of novel "The City and the Mountains" written by the Portuguese novelist Eça de Queirós. At the station you have a tourist office that will give you all information about the Jacinto Ways and other region's "must see".
If you would like to visit the capital of Douro, the city of Régua, you just have to take the train (it takes around 30 minutes). There you can visit the Douro Museum and learn about the history of Douro and of its main winemakers. You can also enjoy the wonderful region's gastronomy and wines. At Régua we would recommend the following restaurants: "Taberna do Jeréré" and "Castas e Pratos". In Régua you can also have a memorable experience if you take the Douro Historical Train to Tua village (you should book in advance). Régua has also plenty of shops and supermarkets.
The World Heritage City of Oporto is also accessible from train. You just have to take the train in Aregos station and leave, 1h40 later, in the Oporto's Central Station of S. Bento. There you will be in the heart of Oporto!
Taking the car, you are also very near from other touristic places that you should visit: the world heritage city of Guimarães, the city of Braga, the city of Amarante and the city of Lamego.
You can arrive at Casa Mateus using your car (recommended) and you will find free public car parking next to the door. If you come by train the Aregos Station is just next to the building.
From Caldas de Aregos village there is a public boat, connecting the two river banks, that will get you to the front of the building.
