A spacious apartment, full of character

We stayed at Ovre Gate 5, an apartment on three floors with plenty of room for our party of three adults. It is part of an old building but the apartment has everything you need for a comfortable, winter stay in the city, including underfloor heating in the bathrooms and wood-burning stoves. The shops of Grunerlokka are very close and the city centre is only about 15 minutes walk away, with excellent tram and bus connections if you don't feel like walking

The property was not as nice as advertised

1. The location is excellent. There is a park across the street. The bus access to the Sentrum is excellent.

2. There is a grocery (Rema 1000) and a liquor outlet, Apent Backeri and pubs less than 10 minutes walk.

3. As noted in other reviews the baths have been recently updated and our very good.

4. We only marginally used the kitchen

5. The beds were very comfortable.

Cons: for the price.

1. To me this is not a ground floor flat, it is a basement walk down. It is all about 2 meters below ground level with high small windows.

2. The dank and damp smell noted in other reviews is still there when you enter the winder stairs down to the flat.

3. The internet was fast once we could get connected. (See power comment).

4. Both the host and his backup were out of town during our stay so onsite help was not available.

5. The power to the flat would overload the breakers and the power would go out. This shut down the internet until our host arrived home Sunday.

6. We could not get the oven in the main kitchen to work. There was a second kitchennett without an oven. Only one of the water kettles worked.

7. It was not cold during our stay so I do not know how the heating would work.

8. The decore of the flat reminded me of a university boy's party pad with some extra rooms. Basically a cheap reclaime of a basement so it could be let out as a temporary, VRBO. It was not dirty or trashed but it just had a once over for the next guests. Since the host is an interior designer, I think he can get it in decent condition.

Communicate with Morten thoroughly before reserving.

Resposta do proprietário: I am glad you liked the location, the park and the bus access and the availability to supermarket - and of course the beds and the baths. From the description on the website and info-folder sent, it clearly describes this as a basement flat - maybe the guests didn't read it properly. (They neither read their air tickets properly neither - coming 24 hours later than agreed, leaving my son in limbo as I myself was abroad. Onsite help was therefore difficult). The power of the flat did NOT overload, the reason for the power cuts was later discovered by electrician as a faulty underfloor heating cable in one of the new bathroom floors. This unfortunately disrupted both wifi and oven, but has now been rectified. I can guarantee that the downstairs is not «a cheap reclaime of a basement so it could be let out as a temporary, VRBO». It is installed with underfloor water heating system, air-condition, grand wood burning stove, cinema projection and a great film library, LP- and DVD collection and a great sound system. That you consider it «a university boy’s part pad» - I take that as a compliment - even though I am NOT a interior designer as you claim!

Loved Oslo ... the apartment not so much

The apartment had the best shower I have ever used and after walking about ten miles everyday the hot water was very soothing. Okay, that is the best thing I can say. The first thing we noticed upon entering the apartment was the dank, musty, mildewy smell. The bed was fine, the oven door was broke, the internet speed was excellent, the location was great, bus stop close (37), grocery within walking distance, and the area was quiet. The cable television provided a ghostly picture reminiscent of the 1960's and was unwatchable (I did check the connections). The furniture is stained and shows considerable wear as do the carpets. I was disappointed but not enough to pay twice the cost at a hotel. The biggest issue was the overpowering musty smell. Would I recommend the apartment? Only with a few upgrades and a dehumidifier and air cleaner to get rid of the smell.

Resposta do proprietário: As the stone floors were washed at the same day of arrival, the only explanation for the wet smell must have been this (I was not present). It could have been easily remedied by contacting my wife upstairs, or opening the windows or use of the air condition unit which supplies fresh air at desired temperature. There are also strong ventilator in both kitchens and bathrooms. The oven is fully functional. TV is not listed as «provided» (as there is no arial to this set), but the giant cinema screen and projector is.

Ottima posizione ben collegata al centro tramite il bus 37. Appartamento carino ma non pulitissimo, leggermente buio. Tutti i servizi ben funzionanti nonché ottima selezione di vinili. Morten simpatico, educato e disponibile.

First time visit to Oslo

I have always wanted to visit Scandinavia, but thought it was too far away and too expensive. I read the reviews about Morten's apartment and thought this might work out for my family. I found the apartment to be a good value, decorated with antiques, in a quiet neighborhood centrally located in Oslo. The apartment is very spacious basically providing three small bedrooms, two bathrooms, one kitchen, and one dining area. The Internet connection is fast. Shopping for groceries is an easy 10 minute walk. The bus stop for Bus #37 is one block away, and will take you to the city center in 10 to 15 minutes.

I purchased the 72 hour Oslo Pass which covered our museum blitz and the bus, tram, metro, and Oslo city ferry. During my eight day stay, I was also able to fit in a DIY Norway in a Nutshell trip, a self-guided excursion on the NSB train into the countryside, followed by a ferry cruise along a beautiful fjord.

Oslo is a beautiful city, rich in history, and very welcoming to visitors. Most of the locals speak English and were very helpful to give directions. The summer days are long with sunlight lasting past 9 pm. The weather was near perfect with cool, sunny days in late May.

This DIY Scandinavian vacation to Oslo exceeded my expectations. Cooking nearly all our meals at the apartment was a key factor in reducing our travel expense. We had a wonderful time visiting Oslo!

oslo in late august

This is a very comfortable apartment. Lots of room with a functional kitchen. At few nice restaurants within walking distance. City centre is within walking distance but if you like you can take a bus from just down the street. Supermarket is an easy walk. Restaurants in oslo are pricey much cheaper to cook you own meals to mitigate cost. I discovered Bislett stadium is about 10 minutes walk away if you wanted to come for the annual track meet that is quite special. Morten is easy to deal with and helpful. It is quiet at night you should sleep well. If you have a car there is street parking I recommend getting a spot before 5 pm as it can get a bit tight but even then we found one. Nice park across the street. Oslo is a wonderful city with world class and interesting museums and also easy access to countryside. If you wanted you can take the subway to wonderful hiking trails and even cross country skiing in winter. I could easily live in oslo and be quite happy
