Joyce and Dean created their retail store, Wallflower, in the heart of downtown Honesdale in 1985. Both having graduated from Penn State University with degrees in business and hospitality, as well as having retail experience, they knew they wanted to return to Joyce’s hometown to create something special. Joyce’s deep love for the area stems from her family’s longstanding roots at Keen Lake and working alongside her parents and sisters at their campground. She learned the value of hardwork, as well as a genuine love of people and community.
Wallflower started as an 800 square foot store specializing in women’s clothing and jewelry, but with Dean’s guidance and artistic flare, expanded to 4000 square feet of home decor, gifts, and much more. Today, the store is a local fixture, providing the community with a trusted go-to place for gifts, housewares, clothing, and a new experience with each visit.
In 2007, having seen a true need for lodging in Honesdale and it’s surrounding areas, it was Dean’s dream to create The Lodge at Keen Lake. Once again employing his unique and creative eye, he created a one-of-a kind space that feels like an upscale retreat, while maintaining the comforts of home. Each unit is designed with high-end furniture and lighting fixtures, specifically chosen by Dean, the artist himself!
Joyce and Dean live on premises, above the log cabin/banquet space, and are truly devoted to their guests. Whether it’s stacking wood, clearing the hiking trails, or decorating the units, you can always find them working to enhance the property. Their hope is that everyone who visits, leaves with appreciation for this special place and are already thinking about when they can return!
