Barree River Cottage -

This is our 2nd stay at this property. You can't beat the acces to the Little J. The house is comfortable and clean. Home away from home! We'll be back!

What a wonderful slice of peaceful living! We loved everything about the cottage. From the clean, comfortable living arrangements to the location, it was a perfect alternative to State College on game weekend. If you appreciate a perfectly seasoned cast iron pan and a fully functioning antique stove, this is the place for you!

There is an authentic feel to this cottage that preserves the spirit of an unfussy retreat for relaxation and reflection. The layout is quirky, but enjoyable with a nice screened in porch, from which you can hear the nearby river and the rhythmic, distant train passing. I did not cook in this visit, but the kitchen looked stocked with the basics in utensils and appliances. The bathroom felt somewhat updated and comfortable.

The upstairs comprises a very large room separated by a curtain creating two bedroom spaces. It would require a friendliness of companions to share this space that is nicely suited to quality sleep. An air-conditioning window unit cooled off the sleeping area in short order. The tree coverage actually keeps the home cooler during the day than the weather would indicate.

This is Pennsylvania country for sure. I had a very enjoyable stay.

Barree River Cottage is over 100 years old, built as a family residence and located about 100 yds from the Little Juniata river. It is an ideal place to base yourself if you want to fish the little 'J' or it would be suitable for a family of 4 (there is one large bedroom with twin beds in one part and a double in the other, separated by a curtain, as it says in the online VRBO material). It sits in the midst of tall trees which give it shade, so it won't get terribly hot in summer. The living room is large and fairly dark with a set of large Elk(?) horns on one wall. The kitchen is small with all the essentials. One of the nice features of the house is its screened porch with a table which seats six. It is quite atmospheric, as you might expect from its age.

It is several miles to the nearest settlement (Alexandria) and further to the nearest stores. There is a Walmart on the way to Huntingdon there is also a Giant on rte 22(?). We wanted a place to unwind (him & her) and fish (him). It is a good location to fish the little 'J', but unfortunately the water flow rate was 4x the average for this time of year, so we did more walking than fishing. But as the flood waned a number of cars with 'trout unlimited' bumper stickers were parked on the road outside, so I think we were in the right place.

Overall, I'd say that it is reasonably priced, has adequate but not outstanding facilities and is a good place for some quiet contemplation/reading or a spot of trout fishing.

Comfortable, and quaint. A well maintained time capsule w/all the modern conveniences you need. We had three in our party but could have comfortably accommodated four. Perfect for fishing the Little J. Short walk to designated fishing access. We would definite stay there again!
