First stay in Hawaii was amazing and this location was always a cool respite from the beach and our
This property is a true gem for our family. The girls loved checking out the garden to pick papaya, feeding the birds, and playing croquett. I loved the peaceful view and rest with the well stocked kitchen and outside shower. This will definitely be a place we go to when we return.
Best part of the vacation
This house is a wonderful place to stay, it felt like paradise. The grounds were beautiful, the view was amazing, the house felt relaxing, and the outdoor shower was used every time.
The owners have done a wonderful job making this a true vacation home. We loved the town of Holualoa and were fortunate enough to be there on the first Friday of the month.
Peaceful cliff-side retreat
I would highly recommend A Hale Lani: it was as lovely as it looked online. It was tastefully decorated, everything was clean and neat and the kitchen included multiple pans, casseroles and staples.
The collection of books about Hawaii was a real asset: I read through a number of them and really enjoyed having the bird and flower books for identification. The fruit trees were interesting, but the papayas were unreachable, leaving only oranges, which were fun to try.(I am sorry the branch tore when I picked the cacao pod, which I didn't recognize until later.)
And the Holualoka Garden was an unexpected delight: it's a wonderful restaurant. It was great to be able to eat and skip the long drive on unfamiliar mountain roads in the dark that eating in Kona would have entailed.
But the road to Holualoa is a challenge that I didn't expect: as a Midwesterner I rarely drive mountain roads and forgot that miles aren't the only thing to consider when judging a location. Eventually I found a route that used Lako Street rather than Mamaloa (?) Highway for the entire journey. It was very steep but much wider, well paved and had many side streets where you could pull over.
I loved the location, but I think renters need to remember how much time and energy it takes to navigate steep two lane roads twice a day -- and that the walk to the local coffee shop starts with a quarter mile almost straight up! But I was pleased to be up on the cool mountain rather than down in the heat near the ocean.
Hidden gem on the big island!
We absolutely loved our stay in this cottage. It is really tucked away with an amazing view making it feel like a secret paradise! It was so nice coming home each evening after a packed day to watch the sunset and make dinner. Everything was in great condition and fully stocked with everything we needed. Important to note that this location is not located right in town so you’ll have to drive everywhere if that matters to you. Thanks for an amazing stay, we’ll be back!
Lots of Aloha
As people who live and work on the Big Island we welcomed a break from our day-to-day lives in this quiet and relaxing retreat. No coqui frogs! The view is spectacular! We appreciated the offer to pick fruit and feed the birds, and we super appreciated that we could bring our dog.
