Two weeks in Lisbon

My wife and I stayed in this apartment for 2 weeks in June. To summarise, it is a well equipped, comfortable and (important for sleep) quiet apartment in a great location in the "old" part of town. It took a couple of days to really appreciate the location - where so many interesting parts of Lisbon were so close, including lots of restaurants. The apartment was excellent value for money, as are most things in Lisbon. We didn't eat-in much, except breakfast, so we never really checked out how well the stove worked or whether there were enough utensils. The fridge was more important! The only aspect that you may want to consider is that the apartment is up 4 flights of stairs, so if your knees or related body parts are not in good condition, you may find that taxing. We were aware of this and accepted the situation as helping with "hill climbing" fitness if you want to walk around Lisbon. However public transport is fun -the old trams - and taxis are cheap and plentiful if you can't face another hill on foot.
Lisbon itself was an enjoyable surprise for us, as we really didn't know much about the city. Try and do the "top 10" spots as per the usual guide books - because in doing so, you'll find lots of other interesting places and sites. We're a bit past the age for late-night bar-hopping (which apparently has lots on offer), so we opted for some long dinners and nights listening to Fado. We can't recommend any particular venue -it's a personal thing, but on many late afternoons we would finish our day with a drink or two at the outdoor cafe on the Miradouro -the scenic view spot very close to the apartment or in the little square Largo do Carmo.
To us, Lisbon was a smaller, friendlier, cheaper and more relaxed version of a major EU city. You wouldn't go there for the cuisine - Portugal has not been changed yet by the western world's current obsession with cooking shows on TV and their obvious consequences. Food is simple and not expensive -which makes travelling there excellent value. The people are generally nice, relaxed and friendly - even the taxi drivers! Lack of Portuguese language is not a major problem, as most seem to cope with English -especially the young ones, who get exposed to it constantly via TV.
We did hire a car for an o'night visit to Obidos, Nazare, Fatima and Tomar. It only whetted our appetite to return to see more of Portugal.
